Commercial and Institutional Legacy Media Transfer Solutions

Commercial / Institutional organizations have legacy media requirements that demand robust “future proof” digital solutions. We produce high-quality digital files that are true to the source content and ready for editing, archiving, or distribution. Our facility and process has been custom built to securely handle a wide range of formats – DATA, VIDEO, AUDIO, FILM, PHOTO/NEGATIVE/SLIDE, X-RAY.

Digital Treasury is a registered member of the GOVERNMENT OF CANADA'S CONTROLLED GOODS PROGRAM providing for a totally secured production environment with onsite remediation facilities. We are a trusted provider of these services to Universities, Cultural Institutions, Government Agencies, Media Companies, S-M-L Enterprise and Family’s.

Our methodology for delivering these solutions is rooted in (1) industry best practices across all formats and (2) the continuous evolution of our processes, people and infrastructure.

Why Digital?

Your legacy media formats are ageing and in some state of decay, the technology required to access these formats is in many cases no longer manufactured, the knowledge and skill-sets required to handle these formats are in very limited supply, and whether it's for reasons of accessibility or long-term security we are reliant on digital ecosystems as the only method to mitigate for all of these risks.

  • LONG TERM PRESERVATION - Digital information can be cloned without generational loss associated with traditional copying methods.
  • EASILY SHAREABLE - Digital information can be shared easily via contemporary cloud platforms or our secure in-house Digital Asset Management (DAM) System.
  • BE PREPARED FOR Web3 - The future of webcommerce will be built upon the blockchain, with digital media you have the option to monetize your media assets.
  • GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR INVESTMENT - There has been a clear investment of time and money in the creation of the content stored on these legacy formats as well as on keeping the materials safe over time. Our solutions save time, save money, mitigate risk, and provide a vehicle for access and distribution.

OUR EXPERTISE in this field is a result of (to 02.2022):

  • 25,00+ unique clients.
  • 34,000+ completed projects.
  • 6.2 petabytes (6200TB) of digital content created, stored and managed.

    Data

We can recover data from most filesystems used over the last 40 years (All versions of FAT, NTFS, HFS and ext. MFS, Amiga, UDF, ZFS, Joliet, ISO, ReiserFS).

We can recover data from magnetic floppies using both conventional read as well as a flux reading method, whereby the fluctuations in magnetic charge on the disk surface is read into a disc image that is then mounted as a working file system.

We can recover data from unfinalized CDs and DVDs.

Data is provided back on external storage devices (Hard drives or flash drives), cloud or LTO tapes.

Metadata can be provided as plain text, XML or JSON filesystem manifests and custom solutions can also be developed to meet project needs (eg. SQL, NoSQL, key-value data).

    Video Tape Transfer

AG transfers begin with professional grade VCRs that feature excellent tracking performance and clean, high-quality analog component and S-Video (Y/C) connections that are run directly into time-base correction devices (TBCs) that suppress and reorganize inconsistencies in analog signals created by tape damage or wear.

Creating a polished analog output is only one part of the Archival Grade transfer process. We use Blackmagic Design's Teranex series of broadcast converters to apply best-in-class upscaling, noise reduction, audio equalization, and deinterlacing to our AG video transfers in real time.

    Media

In addition to improving the visual quality of your transfers, AG service at Digital Treasures also offers the ideal starting point for editors and video producers mixing analog and digital media for documentary, feature film, and broadcast use. Modern video editing systems perform at their best when they are interfacing with efficient files, and the Apple-compliant, fully licensed ProRes 422 files that are standard in the AG tier will ensure optimal random-seek performance, quick decoding, and compatibility across multiple operating systems and video playback software due to the ubiquity of the ProRes family of codecs and the .mov container.

Editors working with modern professional cameras are likely familiar with the challenges of working with a highly-compressed codec like XAVC or even H.265 found in modern recording devices.

Aside from improved compatibility for professionals, the improved color reproduction & accuracy of the files generated by our AG department are also useful for editors and producers working with colorists to blend footage from different cameras and scenes together.

10-bit color, combined with the high-BPC analog-to-digital converters we have implemented, ensures that output from this tier of service is suited for digital color grading alongside modern digital-native media.

For similar reasons, audio is also left uncompressed in our ProRes delivery format, and each tape is individually leveled to ensure consistent volume across projects. Standard audio formats like AAC and MP3 are highly portable and offer efficient compression, but lead to generational loss as the audio is edited into a larger project and re-encoded. PCM audio is widely accepted as a production-grade unprocessed audio format, which is crucial when working with Betacam media that often stores audio as four independent tracks for mixing at broadcast time.
