Developed by Sony, Sharp, JVC, and Canon in 2003, the HDV format would allow for true High Definition video. The format caught on quick with amateurs and semi-professionals due to it’s low cost to create passable broadcast quality content. While still recordable to magnetic tapes, akin to earlier DV formats, the advent of the HDV came alongside the potential to record the data directly to a computer file in the tapeless cameras that were being introduced to the marketplace.
A drawback of the format is that in scenes with fast movements or lots of intricate details are susceptible to digital artifacts (pixelation or digital distortion). This was a result of the lower data transfer rate attributed to the format.
As well as its presence in contemporary broadcast television, with shows like Mythbusters, the format was often used in the consumer market on the small, home video camcorder tape, the MiniDVs.
