SECAM is an analog colour system used for television broadcast, developed in France.
Development began on this system in France, in the mid ‘50s and would take 5 incremental updates (SECAM III B) across a decade before it would be put established in broadcast television. It was the first European standard to go live, though it would only be adopted regionally, with other European countries accepting PAL as the standardized format.
Technically, it is similar to PAL, except it transmits colour in a sequentially in an individual single, opposed to PAL’s dual colour signals. This has been cited as making the format incredibly difficult to edit native content, and is widely preferred to first edit content in PAL before moving the finished product into SECAM.
Due to the incompatible nature of SECAM and PAL on NTSC televisions, attempting run a video cassette from the UK will yield a distorted audio and video signal.
